I approach the pavilion at the park and see the whole gang’s here. Picking up speed, I jog up to them.

“Let me get a cigarette, man,” I say to Liam.

He reaches in the pocket of his low slung jeans. “Well, hello to you too,” he deadpans.

Rolling my eyes, I snag the cig from him. “It’s been a long day.”

I sit down at the table next to Teddy and drop my head on his shoulder, focusing on my cigarette and the slight buzz it gives my head. Ant’s voice breaks through my zoned-out mind. “What’s up with those hickeys, man?”

Fuck. I didn’t want to talk about him today. “Damon,” I simply say while stubbing my cig out on the bottom of my shoe.

When I meet his gaze, it’s obvious he doesn’t want to let it go. “Look, we were fucking around the past few weeks, but last night he showed his true colors,” I muse. Trying to put my feelings into words without sounding ridiculous is harder than I expected. “You know how I am. I can’t just hook up with someone. Can’t do casual.”

His face softens a bit. “It’s all good, man. There’s more where he came from,” he says with a rare smile, sending me into a fit of laughter. “So, you like them big and muscley.” He lifts an eyebrow, tapping his chin in fake concentration.

“Don’t forget pierced!” Liam chimes in.

“Oh my god! I do not need you guys to play matchmaker for me.” I laugh and shake my head.

Liam puffs on a blunt, twisting one of his dreads in his fingers. He’s already taken his shirt off, so his chest and stomach tattoos are on full display. “I think you do need our help, bro. Who do you even talk to other than us?” he says as he lands a trick on his skateboard.

I notice Teddy is dutifully avoiding looking at him, eyes glued to his phone. “Plenty of people think Ben’s hot, but he just doesn’t talk to anyone," he says without looking up from his phone.

I scoff. I know they mean well, but it’s the sad truth. “I doubt that,” I say with a shrug. “Let’s stop talking about me, though.” I beg.

The conversation shifts to everyone’s plans for the weekend. Apparently, there’s a party at the same place we went to a couple weekends ago when I took ecstasy. Flashes of Damon pressing me to the wall behind the house flit through my mind. A shitty reminder of how fucking alive he made me feel.

I opt out of going because I’d rather not have to see him and there’s a strong possibility he’ll be there to deal. Probably best if I stay home anyway, so I’m more likely to make it to school on Monday. Teddy stands up abruptly. “Alright, I’m gonna head out,” he says.

“To where?” Liam asks him.

“I’m going to Asher’s house.” He shrugs.

Liam grabs his skateboard. “That who you’ve been texting nonstop?”

“Um, yeah.”

“I’m coming with you. Let’s go.” He starts skating away, not waiting up for Teddy.
